WARPING A BACKGROUND

To emphasize a subject in your image, try warping the background for a special effect. Simply click on the Edit menu and choose Copy. Next, click on the Edit menu again and choose Paste, As New Layer. You should now have a duplicate layer of your background. Activate the background by clicking on Background in the Layer Palette. Then click on the Image menu and choose Deformations, Warp. Leave the settings at their defaults and click OK.

From the Layer Palette, click and drag the Opacity slider to about 20% on Layer 1 so that you can see both the layer and the background layer. To remove the area around the outside of your subject, use the Lasso tool with the Feather set to 2. Now outline your subject by clicking at each curve. Once you're all the way around the subject, right-click to make it a selection. Next, click on the Selections menu and choose Invert. Press the Delete key; doing so clears the area around the outside of your subject and leaves your subject intact. Finally, adjust the Opacity to 100%. Your subject now appears to be exiting a vortex!
