CREATING A NAIL HEAD OR SCREW

Suppose you're making a rustic frame for your image, and you want to create the appearance of nails or screws. Here's how to do it: Open a new 100x100 transparent image. Now grab the Shapes tool, set it at Circle, Antialias, and make the Foreground color white. Draw the circle onto your transparent canvas. Go to the Image menu and choose Effects, Inner Bevel. Set the Bevel width at 2 and the Softness at 0. The Light color should be gray. The rest of the settings are up to your discretion and depend on how you want the nail head or screw to appear; the possibilities are endless.

When you have the look you want, click OK. Now you can copy and paste your creation onto your image. If you want it to be a screw, simply add a new layer. Grab the Line tool, set it at Single line, and draw a line at the center of the head. Go to the Image menu and choose Effects, Cutout. Uncheck the Fill With color, set the Offset for both sliders at 2, and leave the rest of the settings at their defaults. For a tutorial on this subject and other metalwork, visit
