Here's a quick and easy way to get an embossed effect without turning an image gray. Open an image and increase the color depth to 16.7 million colors. Now go to the Image menu and choose Effects, Colored Chalk. Set the Detail to 100% and the Opacity to 30%. Doing this will give an embossed effect without altering the original color scheme.
